Two detainees were shot and killed at a Dallas, Texas, ICE facility by a possible "sniper" perched on a nearby roof.
That's according to initial reports from local television station WFAA-TV. The gunman was identified via sources to CNN as Joshua Jahn.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security later wrote in a statement on X:
"This morning, a deranged gunman attacked a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Dallas field office from a nearby rooftop. The shooter fired indiscriminately at the ICE building, as well as at a van in the sallyport where the victims were shot. Three detainees were shot."
The DHS statement continued: "Two are deceased, and the other is in critical condition. The gunman was found with a self-inflicted gun wound. We can confirm, the shell casings were found with anti-ICE messages on them. This was an attack on ICE law enforcement. This horrific attack occurred amidst the 1000% increase in assaults against @ICEgov. Politicians and media pundits must stop the vile lies and smears designed to demonize and dehumanize ICE law enforcement. This shooting must serve as a wake-up call to the far-left that their rhetoric about ICE has consequences."
Police sources told the television station that "two ICE detainees were killed and one person was injured at a Dallas ICE facility." An ICE spokesperson told NBC News that the third person shot is also an ICE detainee.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem wrote on X: "There was a shooting this morning at the Dallas @ICEgov Field Office. Details are still emerging but we can confirm there were multiple injuries and fatalities. The shooter is deceased by a self-inflicted gun shot wound. While we don’t know motive yet, we know that our ICE law enforcement is facing unprecedented violence against them. It must stop. Please pray for the victims and their families."
However, NBC News reported that no ICE officers were injured.
CNN also reported that three people were injured in the mass shooting, which the network reported came at an ICE field office on the morning of September 24. As with WFAA, CNN reported that at least two detainees were among those killed.
The shooter is also dead, according to WFAA-TV, which did not identify the gunman. CNN reported that the gunman died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The shooting occurred at the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement office "shortly before 7 a.m. Wednesday at 8101 North Stemmons Freeway in Dallas," WFAA reported, adding that "police were searching for a possible sniper or multiple shooters."
It's not clear whether there are multiple shooters, though. It's fairly common in active shooting situations for early reports of multiple shooters to be wrong because of the chaotic nature of these scenes.
According to CNN, the Dallas ICE facility previously received a bomb threat, and the September 24 shooting was "at least the third instance of an Immigration Customs and Border Protection facility being targeted by gunfire in Texas this year."
