Derrick Groves, the last inmate to be captured after escaping the Orleans Parish Justice Center in May, blew a kiss to the cameras while being taken into custody.
Video footage from the arrest showed police escorting Groves to a car as he looked up and blew a kiss, a bold gesture that capped off nearly five months on the run. Law enforcement sources told WWL that officers surrounded a home in southwest Atlanta after receiving a tip that Groves was inside. Police reportedly gassed the residence multiple times before Groves surrendered.
Groves escaped from the New Orleans jail on May 16 along with nine other inmates. While the others were all recaptured within weeks, Groves managed to evade law enforcement for months, making him the final fugitive from the Orleans Parish jailbreak.
He had been serving time for the 2018 Mardi Gras Day killings of two men in New Orleans’ Ninth Ward and was awaiting sentencing at the time of his escape.
