SZA has opened up about the scathing rant Nicki Minaj unloaded on her earlier this summer.
The former collaborators — who worked on Nicki’s 2014 Beyoncé-featuring collab, "Feeling Myself" — bizarrely became foes over the summer when Minaj targeted the singer in a rant that also included TDE’s Punch.
In a new conversation with GQ, SZA shared her thoughts on the situation, and it appears she's a little confused about where the wrath came from.
"I don’t know her," SZA said. "We have no connection to each other. There’s no backstory. Like, there was no through line narrative. It was just like, 'Roc Nation'.... I don’t know where it came from. That’s not even my place to correct a narrative that I don’t got shit to do with. It was a little strange. It was very like, 'Why?' But also, you know, 'I guess.'"
Minaj first took aim at SZA in mid-July in a rant that lasted for days, where the Pink Friday 2 rapper, seemingly out of nowhere, quote-tweeted SZA’s note about mercury in retrograde and made fun of the fake freckles that SZA once sported.
"Go draw your freckles back on bookie," Nicki wrote, prompting SZA to respond, "I don’t give a fuck bout none of that weird shit you popping."
In that moment, SZA gracefully withdrew, but Minaj’s jabs didn’t stop there; she also pulled in Punch. "Btch damn near broke that man back & leg. Bitch fat chubby & Skinny @ the same damn time," Minaj tweeted. "Bitch where are those 30 million streams that disappeared on Spotify like your feaux freckles."
Afterwards, SZA left Nicki with one final message: "Nicki, you absolutely know my music and what I contribute cause you’ve asked for features twice to no response."
The SOS singer's comments came with a screenshot of Minaj allegedly asking for a feature from her via text. "Lol ur having a moment ..im not sure why but be blessed," she added.
