Redman has nothing but love for his fellow Brick City native and ex-girlfriend Faith Evans.
In an interview with Acton Entertainment posted on Wednesday (Sept. 9), the Newark, New Jersey, rapper was asked about his time dating the R&B vocalist and how he felt when she began dating the late The Notorious B.I.G.
Evans and Biggie married in August 1994, just two months after they met during a promotional Bad Boy Records photoshoot. The couple welcomed their only child together, Christopher Jordan “C.J." Wallace, in 1996, less than a year before the rapper was murdered in Los Angeles.
"When she started her relationship with Biggie, I was jealous," Redman joked around the eight-minute, 45-second mark of the video below. "First of all, Faith and I, Faith was my sister's best friend, and I met Faith through my sister... Yeah, we were all young."
The rapper added that Evans has always been a "sweetheart" and that he tried to recruit her as a collaborator of EPMD, although R&B wasn't a specialty for the hip-hop duo.
"She was amazing and still is today one of the best queens of R&B to me," Redman continued. "I wanted to put her on, but I was just getting on myself, so I really couldn't do too much."
EPMD, particularly member Erick Sermon, wasn't dabbling in R&B, but Redman said that Evans would still visit him before she "made a connection and got on" with Bad Boy.
"When she started dating Biggie and stuff ... I was doing my thing. I was already on tour wylin' out with chicks, you know," Redman recounted. "Me and her had
split and parted ways, of course, but she would still come to see me.
"Then she finally got on, and I was happy for them," he added. "So when she dated Biggie, man, I was like, you know, Faith has always been a smart person. You know, she's Brick City. She's Jersey all day. So, of course, she's going to move with good discernment."
Redman added that he was "amazed" at Evans' successful career and that she was part of "one of the hottest rap crews at the time."
"I was, 'Wow, she's doing her thing.' So only thing I can do was salute her, pray for her and wish her the best," he continued.
The exes are still friends, last collaborating on 2024 song "Hoodstar" from Redman's Muddy Waters Too album. Elsewhere in the interview, Redman said that he's "one call away" when the "Love Like This" singer needs him, although he usually jokes about what she used to wear in the past.
"When I call her and text her, it's usually I be clowning on her about something or I'll be like, 'Yo, Faye, look at them shoes you had on back in the the '80s,'" he recalled. "I found some old pictures of her with some old ass shoes on and I text her with that or whatever."
On a 2018 episode of Drink Champs, around the four-minute mark, Evans noted that Redman was her boyfriend when she was in ninth grade and that the rapper was a church drummer at the time.
