Kid Cudi's 2008 Track "Maui Wowie" Hits Billboard Hot 100 Chart After Blowing Up on TikTok

"17 years old and timeless," Cudi previously said of the 2008 track's TikTok popularity.

Over 17 years after its original release, Kid Cudi’s “Maui Wowie” has hit the Billboard Hot 100 thanks to TikTok.

In the latest charts update, the song is at No. 71, currently sandwiched between RAYE’s “Where Is My Husband” and JISOO and ZAYN’s “Eyes Closed.” This marks the 2008 A Kid Named Cudi track’s first appearance on the Hot 100.

In recent weeks, “Maui Wowie,” which also serves as the opening track to the career-spanning The Boy Who Flew to the Moon compilation released in 2022, has become the subject of a TikTok trend endorsed by Cudi himself.

“Goin’ back to Honolulu just to get that/That Maui Wowie, that Maui Wowie,” Cudi sings in the song's chorus, which has soundtracked numerous clips of TikTok users hanging from crosswalk signs.

As previously reported, Know Your Meme traces the beginning of the trend to a video shared by TikTok user @aaronxbrownn in September. The trend grew from there, with Cudi ultimately joining in himself earlier this month.

“Thank u to everyone for posting my song and havin fun and showing love!!!” Cudi told fans when sharing his take on the streams-boosting “Maui Wowie” trend. “17 years old and timeless.”

Cudi released his most recent album, Free, in August. The same month, his memoir, titled Cudi, also hit shelves. In the wake of both, fans were informed that a break was on the horizon, at least when it comes to new solo music.

As Cudi explained in September, his focus will be on “other dreams” for now.

“Taking a break but wanted to leave u [with] something special and from the heart,” the MaXXXine executive producer said when sharing “Once,” billed as a “goodbye for now song,” to SoundCloud. “[You’ll] be hearing me featured on my friends’ albums but as far as me, I gotta step into the shadows and focus on my other dreams.”
