Ashanti has addressed her feelings about Irv Gotti’s death, revealing that she “always wanted peace” between them.

The 44-year-old singer sat down with Angie Martinez in an episode of her IRL podcast that was released this week, where she opened up about her reaction to his death, the tribute post she shared, and their complicated relationship.

“It was a lot to process,” said Ashanti about his untimely passing. “I was really sad and I’m still sad that it ended like this. There was a time where things were just amazing and I know that I always wanted peace for both of us and to be cordial. I wished peace for him and I prayed for him to be at peace. You don’t really see this coming. It came out of nowhere.”

She also opened up about her dream of reconciliation with him because of what they accomplished together. “I really wanted it to happen,” she explained. “We made history together — that’s infinite.”

“I’m sad that the last few years we weren’t seeing eye to eye,” she continued. “What I do know is that I tried. I do know that I extended the olive branch and again, I just wanted things to be cool. I didn’t want no smoke.

Earlier this month, Ashanti shared a heartfelt tribute to Gotti on her Instagram Story. The raw message acknowledged that they weren’t on good terms, but also expressed gratitude for everything that he did for her.

“I can’t believe things ended like this….and it makes me so sad,” she wrote. “We weren’t on the best terms the past few years but as I’ve always said, through our ups and downs I will forever be grateful for everything that you’ve done for me. We made history and that will remain infinite.”

“I’ve always respected your musical genius and ability to push me to be my best.. All the greatness and positive things that came, far outweigh the dark and negative times. I have always prayed for you to find peace,” Ashanti continued. “Sending love and prayers to the entire family. Rest well. Rest in Peace Irv.”

In 2022, Ashanti responded to Irv Gotti's comments about their relationship, stating that he "lied about a lot of things" following his appearance on 'Drink Champs' where he alluded to having feelings for her. She described Gotti as "narcissistic" and "selfish" and suggested he showed signs of being "hurt."
