Elon Musk revealed candid details about his complicated relationship with Grimes while sharing screen time with Ye in the rapper's upcoming documentary In Whose Name?.
In an exclusive clip from the Nico Ballesteros–directed film, obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, Musk is seen backstage after one of West's Miami shows. He praises Ye's elaborate stage production before the two retreat to a cushion-lined room and lie side by side while staring at the ceiling, with the conversation taking an unexpected turn.
"So are you and Kim like off and on or something? Or, I don't know, it's hard to tell," Musk asks, laughing as West stays silent. Musk then reflects on his own relationship with Grimes, the mother of three of his children.
"Claire and I, Grimes," Musk says, "We're sort of … you know, in the same text stream, she's like, 'I love you.' And then, like, you know, a day later, like, 'I hate you.'" Musk chuckles before looking at West for advice. Ye replies, "And what do you do?" Musk admits he has no clear response: "Whoa, OK. Yeah, exactly." West then offers, "I don't have answers. Answers to everything except for that."
Musk began dating Grimes in 2018 after bonding over a shared interest in artificial intelligence and art. Their on-and-off relationship has since drawn widespread attention, with the pair welcoming three children together: X Æ A-12, Exa Dark Sideræl (nicknamed Y), and Techno Mechanicus. Though they've split and reconciled multiple times, both Musk and Grimes have described their bond as unconventional but deeply connected.
The awkward but revealing moment between Musk and Ye is just a taste of the documentary's raw, unfiltered style. The documentary's director, Nico Ballesteros, who started shadowing the rapper when he was 18 years old, compiled over 3,000 hours of footage across six years.
His camera captures not only rare conversations with figures like Musk but also glimpses of West navigating his split from Kim Kardashian, his controversial public outbursts, and his relationships with women like Chaney Jones, who drew attention for her Kardashian-inspired style. In Whose Name? is set to be released on September 19.
