Tyler, The Creator is “beyond grateful” to have been enlisted for Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme, which had its surprise world premiere on Monday night as part of the 63rd New York Film Festival.
The A24-backed film, set for a Christmas Day theatrical release, is led by Timothée Chalamet and is undoubtedly one of the year’s most-anticipated releases. Notably, it will arrive mere months after Benny Safdie’s own solo A24 entry The Smashing Machine, which saw Dwayne Johnson giving a remarkably revealing performance as UFC champ Mark Kerr.
“Thank you to you, Josh. Please make the biggest noise for this man,” Tyler said at Monday night’s secret festival screening. “I’m so grateful, beyond grateful. I play piano and put on cool clothes. I do not act at all. This man is so good that I trusted him and said, ‘Anything you need. I don’t want to read this script. I will show up and be there.’ Because I trust this man and the way he curated and handled every detail. And the team, working with y’all, it was so wonderful. I got emotional up there because you gave me a chance, so I thank you, I love you, and thank you. Please give it up.”
While Tyler has appeared in the Jackass film franchise, as well as lended his voice to the animated Pharrell biography Piece by Piece, Marty Supreme marks his first full-fledged performance as an actor in a feature film.
Also in attendance for Monday night’s screening were fellow cast members Timothée Chalamet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A'zion, and Ronald Bronstein. Immediately after the screening, early reactions pointed to potential awards season glory for the film.
“Belief is what this movie’s about,” Josh said Monday night, later adding that “Tyler dreams very big,” a nod to the film’s tagline.
