The NFL is weighing possible discipline against Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase after a heated exchange with Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Jalen Ramsey in Week 11 turned into one of the game’s biggest flashpoints.

What began as routine jawing between two elite players shifted abruptly midway through the fourth quarter, per the league's official report.

With Pittsburgh firmly ahead on the scoreboard, Chase and Ramsey lined up across from each other and continued a back-and-forth that had been simmering throughout the afternoon.

Moments later, Ramsey swung at Chase’s helmet and pulled at his facemask before teammates stepped in to separate them. Officials flagged both players, but only Ramsey was sent to the locker room with more than 13 minutes remaining.

Once the game ended, Ramsey explained why he reacted the way he did. Speaking with reporters, he said Chase spat on him right before things escalated. His frustration was evident as he recalled the moment, noting that the game itself took a backseat once that line was crossed.

Chase disputed the accusation immediately. He told reporters he never spat and insisted he kept his mouth closed during the entire confrontation.

According to Chase, the two had exchanged words all game, and Ramsey didn’t like what he heard. Despite that denial, broadcast footage shared afterward appeared to show spit coming from Chase’s direction as he faced Ramsey.

On the officiating side, referee Bill Vinovich said his crew did not witness any spitting. He added that nothing they saw merited additional penalties beyond the unsportsmanlike conduct flags already issued.

Even without an on-field ruling, the league is now reviewing the incident. According to CBS Sports reporter Jonathan Jones, the NFL plans to evaluate both player statements and available video.

The league has dealt with a similar situation this season. In the season opener, Philadelphia Eagles lineman Jalen Carter was removed from the field for spitting on Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott and later received a one-game suspension. Because Carter was ejected on the first play, the league counted his time away from the game as fulfillment of that suspension.

That prior decision is now the benchmark for Chase. If the NFL determines the video confirms Ramsey’s account, Chase could face a significant fine—potentially more than $50,000—and a one-game suspension. Cincinnati is set to play the New England Patriots in Week 12, and a ruling is expected before that game.
