Venus Williams has received a new honor off the court, this time in the form of a Barbie.
According to WWD, Mattel announced the launch of a Venus Williams doll as part of its Inspiring Women series, designed to celebrate her historic 2007 Wimbledon victory and her groundbreaking fight for gender equality in sports.
This is not the first time the brand has recognized Williams. In May 2024, she was included in Barbie’s 65th anniversary collection. However, this latest release carries deeper significance, underscoring her role as a trailblazer who helped secure equal prize money for women competing at the highest levels of tennis.
The new Barbie captures the look Williams wore when she defeated Marion Bartoli in the 2007 Wimbledon final. The doll comes dressed in her signature all-white Reebok tennis kit, paired with a Wilson racket and jewelry similar to what she wore on the court. That match not only marked her fifth Wimbledon title but also made her the first woman to take home equal prize money at a top-level tournament, a milestone that changed the sport forever.
“It’s incredibly special to be recognized as a Barbie Inspiring Women doll,” Williams told WWD. “Throughout my career, I’ve worked hard to break barriers and create opportunities for those who have come after me.”
She added, “That journey wouldn’t have been possible without believing in my own potential — a belief that aligns with Barbie’s mission to inspire the limitless potential in every girl. I hope this doll empowers the next generation to dream big, inspires them to always stay true to who they are and stand up for what they believe in.”
Mattel also emphasized her impact. Krista Berger, senior vice president of Barbie and global head of dolls, said in a statement, “Her unwavering fight for equal prize money in professional tennis forever changed the game, paving the way for future generations to dream bigger. Venus is a shining example of courage, resilience and empowerment, and we are honored to celebrate her remarkable legacy.”
