Patrick Beverley's attorney, Letitia Quinones-Hollins, defended the former NBA player following his arrest on a felony assault charge last week.

"Patrick is not a violent man and was not violent that night. In fact, he was very respectful with the authorities that night and encouraged others to do the same," Quinones-Hollins said in a statement obtained by TMZ Sports. "He has always looked out for their wellbeing and will continue to do so."

"I have every expectation that when all the facts are in, Patrick will be cleared of these charges," the statement concluded.

Beverley was taken into custody in Texas on Friday where he was charged with Assault on a Family Member/Household Member Impeding Breath or Circulation. He was released after posting his $40,000 bond.

The attorney’s statement shed light on the circumstances surrounding Beverley’s arrest, which stem from an incident in which he discovered his teenage sister at home alone with an 18-year-old man in the middle of the night.

"Patrick Beverley has no criminal record. He cares deeply about his little sister – a young lady, a minor," the statement reads. "Given that, when he unexpectedly found her alone in the home with an 18-year-old man in the middle of the night, he was understandably concerned, as any brother would be about his sister. However, we don’t believe what followed happened the way it’s been described and we look forward to the opportunity to address that in court."

In the days that followed, new alleged details emerged. According to the probable cause affidavit, Beverley's sister had left home "without permission" to see her boyfriend at a nearby park. The minor’s mother, Lisa, instructed her daughter to call the boyfriend to pick her up, but when he arrived, Lisa told him to go inside the house.

Beverley was called to come over, and upon his arrival, he scolded his sister before things allegedly became violent. The former NBA player is accused of grabbing his sister "by her neck with both hands," and picking her up off the ground.

His sister alleges she was unable to breathe when Beverley had his hands around her neck for between 20 to 30 seconds. She also claimed the 37-year-old Beverley pulled her out of the bedroom by neck, and slammed her body against walls in another room.

The affidavit also alleges that Beverley punched his sister in the left eye with a closed fist while standing over her on the sofa and told her he would be "the family relative to kill her."

When the boyfriend was instructed to leave the house, Beverley allegedly followed him outside. Upon returning, the boyfriend contacted police.

Officials noted markings on the sister’s neck and petechiae in the whites of her eyes, a sign of broken capillaries.
