Diplo’s remarks on the general horniness of Montreal in a recent podcast interview ultimately led to him jokingly saying that he dated both Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau.
Speaking with Nayeema Raza for the Smart Girl Dumb Questions podcast in October, the three-time Grammy winner, whose past relationship with Perry is well-documented, described the city in the Quebec province as “very porny.” This prompted the host to bring up “hot” Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
“Now Katy Perry is dating Justin Trudeau,” Diplo responded, adding that this romantic pairing is “pretty fire” in his eyes.
Diplo also pointed out that he once “dated” the 143 artist, leading to a temporary misunderstanding following a follow-up question from Nayeema.
“Oh, I did date Trudeau too,” Diplo said, quickly breaking out into laughter. “That was a weird one though, because I’m just not into politicians.”
While Diplo could indeed be being genuine with this aside about Trudeau, it seems unlikely. For one, he’s laughing. Secondly, the timeline of the former Canadian Prime Minister’s marriage to Sophie Grégoire, whom he married in 2005, also points to this being merely a joke. Trudeau and Grégoire announced their separation in 2023.
Over the weekend, Trudeau made Katy-centric headlines once again thanks to a Halloween costume photo that many have assumed includes a nod to the singer’s viral Left Shark moment circa 2015.
Meanwhile, Perry confirmed she’s currently “dating” an unnamed individual during a recent show. Presumably, this individual is Trudeau.
“This guy is trying to get me to marry him and he has a ring in his hand,” she told the audience when spotting one particularly eager fan in the crowd. “No, I am dating someone else for crying out fucking loud. Not appropriate.”
