Russell Wilson isn’t going anywhere—at least, not by his own choosing.
The New York Giants quarterback addressed reporters, including Newsweek, after interim head coach Mike Kafka handed the Week 11 start to Jameis Winston.
The move comes as rookie Jaxson Dart remains in concussion protocol following last weekend’s loss to the Chicago Bears, where Wilson stepped in during the second half.
Wilson, who opened the 2025 season as QB1 before Dart took over after Week 3, made it clear that his role shift isn’t triggering any behind-the-scenes drama. Asked whether he’d request his release, the 36-year-old shut the door on that immediately.
“I want to see it through. I haven’t asked for my release or anything like that. I want to be here,” Wilson told reporters. “...I still want to keep playing football. I love it, obviously, and I feel like I still got it.”
Kafka explained his decision to start Winston—who hasn’t taken a snap this season and entered the year as the team’s third option—by pointing to the consistency he’s seen in the quarterback room.
“I think Jameis has done a great job since he’s been here,” Kafka said. “I got a lot of trust in that room… I think Jameis will do a heck of a job. He’s a great leader, he has a lot of production in this league, and I think he’s going to do a great job leading that group.”
Wilson’s brief appearance against Chicago produced 45 passing yards on three completions across seven attempts, as the Giants gave up a fourth-quarter lead. Over six games this season, Wilson has completed 58% of his passes for 831 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions.
For now, the plan is straightforward: Winston starts. Dart continues recovery. Wilson stays ready, and he's not going anywhere for now.
